We read about The Filling Station on ColumbusHotWings.com and decided to
check it out. The credibility of the website has been questionable in the past,
so we approached the bar & grill with limited expectations.
The Filling Station is located at 8765 Smoky Row Road in Columbus, OH. It’s
easy enough to find – from I-270 on the north side of town, take Sawmill Road
north to the seventh traffic light. Turn right onto Summit View Road. When the
road dead-ends, take a left and the Filling Station will be in the second strip
center on the left.
The Filling Station is a true bar & grill, with seating for 80+. They have
numerous amusement devices to include electronic darts, video poker, video golf,
pool, video Big Buck Hunter and others. The Wing General would especially
appreciate the video bowling. There are at least 13 TV screens of various
shapes and sizes. There were 9 neon signs on the walls, and, true to form, one
of the neons wasn’t working properly.
We studied the menu and found a large assortment of appetizers, sandwiches
and pizzas available. We found the wing section and placed an order of extra
crisp hot wings and fries. Prices were reasonable at a 10 pc for $4,99, 20 pc.
for $9.99, and a 40 pc for $19.99. Celery and blue cheese are provided in that
price, or you can wimp out and choose ranch dressing.
The food arrived, freshly cooked in a nice presentation with red and white
checkerboard paper liners in the bowls. The fries were of the “matchstick”
variety, and extremely thin cut. We don’t much care for them because they go
cold so quickly, but they do retain their crispness when cold.
The wings were a little bit large for our liking, not uncommon in
establishments these days. The crispness level was superb, and the sauce tasted
very good, though not overpoweringly hot. We did get 6 drummettes to 4
wingettes, but that probably means that someone else got 4 drums and 6 wingettes.
The entire bill for 10 pieces of wings, fries and a beer was $8.33 before
tip. An extremely good value considering what you get. We enjoyed our
experience overall, but we’re not certain that we would use up an entire wing
splurge here, with Quaker Steak & Lube being the more notable option for
overly large, tough & chewy wings in
Columbus. Quaker Steak wins for the flavor in the sauce.
