We set a goal at the first of the year to get into the Wing Zone to find out
what the concept was all about. After last year’s excitement in discovering
Wings To Go, and the previous discoveries of Wing Stop and Quaker Steak and
Lube, we were hoping that Wing Zone would make the grade as a great wing chain.
Well, if you like huge, tough, expensive, flavorless wings served in a
filthy, nasty environment, Wing Zone just might be the place for you.
We visited the location in Lexington, Kentucky, near the campus of
University of Kentucky. We were in a hurry to use the restroom after driving
for a while, and when we entered the restroom we found our shoes sticking to the
floor from the urine leak that had puddle the entire surface. As we walked the
long, dark and dirty hallway, we could hear the sound of our shoes tracking the
urine down the pathway.
At the front counter, we place and order for a 5 piece snack and fries,
nearly falling over backwards at the $8 price tag after being forced to buy a
bottle of water, because they don’t serve ice water. We suspected further
trouble when we noticed the menu board proudly proclaiming “Jumbo Wings.” Some
people are SO ignorant about the size of wings – they think they’re getting more
for their money when they have larger wings. They just don’t understand the
concept of small chicken = tender chicken.
After waiting about 20 minutes, the order arrived. We realized that they
don’t give you celery here, just blue cheese or ranch. Cheap bastards!
The wings were way too big, and tough and chewy to boot. The sauce looked
good, but was devoid of any real flavor or heat. The fries were greasy-seasoned
with some type of batter that really didn’t do the trick. We had to empty about
10 catsup packets (hate that) in order to get catsup for the fries.
The whole experience would best be forgotten – but you must remember to stay
away from Wing Zone at all costs. We’ll have to stick to our great national
chains, Quaker Steak & Lube, Wing Stop and Wings To Go.
